Some Doctors Don't Consider Chiropractic Health A Valued Approach
Most medical terms read like foreign languages, and chiropractic health is no different. A conversation between two doctors, in English, can leave a person wondering what the heck they were talking about. A conversation between two chiropractors does the same thing to other physicians.
Some physicians practicing main stream medicine don't consider the chiropractic health approach to be of any value. They refer to doctors of the chiropractic as quakes and warn their patients to try more conventional methods of treatment. Various studies have concluded that, while spinal manipulation can treat some back injuries, it has no effect on your general well being.
Everyone in the medical community doesn't feel the same way. After the land mark ruling in the 1987 anti trust case, more and more doctors shed their dislike of the controversial treatment method and began to give it a chance. The chiropractic health industry as a whole benefitted from this new found acceptance, however doctors considered "straights" are still fighting for respectability.
This situation where two very different ways of treating the same area of the body fall into one category is precedented. In dealing with injuries to the feet, one can use the methods of podiatry or reflex ology. Just like in the chiropractic health field, the two methods of treatment rival each other in more than just names. What is unlike the chiropractic is that these two treatments don't go about business under the same name. Reflex ology believers and practitioners are much like straights in their beliefs.
The two types of doctors within chiropractic health are called straights and mixers. Straights believe that general health and fitness can be affected by problems with the back. They don't believe in diversifying treatments. The founder of all chiropractic health treatment was a straight, as was his son. In the beginning, straights didn't use instruments. Mixer was used as a derogatory term, for those early practitioners of chiropractic health who used instruments.
Mixers are just that. They believe in their work with the back. They know that overall health improves with the correction of vertebrae subluxations, but they don't limit themselves or their patients to one type of treatment as a cure all. Chiropractors who consider themselves to be mixers are more common in number and acceptance. Even straights had to concede that mixers were validated in their use of x-rays during the early 1900s.
Today, mixers are the dominate form of physician within the industry. While some still consider themselves to be straights, their number is dwindling. Also, gaining momentum in what could be considered a similar form of treatment is acupuncture. Acupuncturists incorporate the use of needles to relieve back pain. They, like straights, believe injuries dealing with the spine affect overall health in other areas.
Today, the number of chiropractors has grown. Doctors of chiropractic health work in more than a hundred countries. Great Britain and Australia are rapidly gaining professionals within the industry, while Canada and the United States lead the way. Officials believe the number of licensed Chiropractors will soon be in the hundreds of thousands.
